Bingo winner has plans to play Santa

For Doug Beaverbones, Sun Bingo means it's Christmas. The Rocky Mountain House resident claimed a portion of the Sun Bingo jackpot yesterday - splitting the $10,000 with five others - and immediately had visions of sugar plums dancing in his head.

"I'm going to be Santa," said Beaverbones, his eight-year-old daughter Shaylyn beaming as she sat on his knee.

"I never thought I would win," said the 40-year-old. "You get a million people playing."

Darrell and Karen Wandio celebrated by pouring a little Bailey's Irish Cream into their coffee after matching their numbers. Darrell, 42, had to check the numbers several times before realizing he'd won.

"We always get that one number left," said Darrell.

"It came today," said Karen.

The couple plans to pay some bills and go Christmas shopping.

They weren't the only ones pumped to claim their loot, which worked out to $1,666.66 for each of the six winners.

"I'm so excited," said Leduc's Cheryl Taylor, 53. "I've never won anything."

Taylor, who's subscribed to the Sun for over two decades, said she got into Bingo because of her mother-in-law, Laura Taylor, who died in 1994.

She thought about her after winning. "I was thinking 'too bad it didn't happen when she was alive,' " said Taylor.

She also plans to do some Christmas shopping. And she'll take friends out for supper and buy a new coat for herself.

Marion Kaluza, 41, got into Sun Bingo earlier this year and became a first-time winner.

"I couldn't believe it," she said. "Maybe it was a little bit of denial. You just sit there and look at it and look at it."

She planned to share her winnings with her family and the church she attends.

Sheldon Rempel of Edmonton and Bruce Larocque of Hobbema also won portions of the jackpot.

And there's still a crack at more cash, with two weeks left of Sun Bingo.
